So easy to get an A these days?
Byline: Sonia Ramachandran; Chandra Devi Renganayar
Edition: New Sunday Times
Section: Main Section
LAST week, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said it was "so easy" for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia students to get an A+ grade these days.
He said this had resulted in "declining education standards" and a growing number of SPM top scorers who fail to excel at tertiary level.
Is it "so easy" to get an A nowadays? Undoubtedly, the number of A scorers keep increasing through the years. However, is this because students are smarter? Or are exams getting easier?
Former Higher Education Department director-general Prof Datuk Dr Hassan Said dismisses claims that the standards of local public examinations have declined.
"Our exams are assessed by an external examination board so they have to meet international standards. There is no such thing as declining standards. Students now are scoring better not because exams are easier but because they have more reference materials and learning support.
"In the past, there was no Internet and not much research resources," said Hassan, who is currently the vice-chancellor and president of Taylor's University.
Educators, too, believe that the standard of public examinations have increased and is, in fact, more difficult than before.
Tuition teacher Asiah Mohamed said the standard of the Bahasa Melayu paper has increased over the years.
"If you look at the UPSR, PMR and SPM papers over the last 10 years, you can see that the level of difficulty has gone up. The learning scope has also been widened to include Malay Literature.
"There is constant development and even I have to keep myself updated otherwise I will not be able to teach my students."
Asiah, who has been teaching for 25 years, said students need to be really good to get an A for the subject. She said urban students mostly obtained As in exams because they have opportunities to learn from various sources.
"Parents, schools and teachers are also all focused on ensuring that students obtain As.
"Parents who want to see their children excel invest in books, tuition classes, computers and the Internet - anything that will provide additional opportunities for their child to do well in exams.
"In schools, teachers put students through extra classes, tests and give more exercises. Every step of the way, a student's mind is tuned to getting As," said Asiah.
She said the reason top scoring students did not do well in university and in the working world was because of the spoon- feeding they had received.
"Life in university is different and they are required to be more independent. And since there is no longer hand-holding from parents and teachers, some students become lost. They are not able to cope and perform.
"They are only smart on paper but in the real world it is a different story altogether," Asiah added.
Another tuition teacher, Gurdev Singh, said Science examinations, too, were tougher now compared with before.
"Be it Physics, Chemistry, Biology or General Science, the standard of exams is on par with those in the United Kingdom and the United States. If before students were required to memorise facts, now questions are more application-based.
"This means students must have knowledge and understanding to answer questions. Memorising alone will not help them obtain As."
However, he said students need to spend more time in labs for Science subjects.
"Science is a practical subject but now students spend minimal time in the lab doing experiments. Most schools also have ill- equipped science labs or labs that are hardly used."
A retired teacher, who only wanted to be known as Ameer, said, however, that the English language syllabus and examinations had been "watered down".
"Passing marks have also been lowered. That is why you have students who are not proficient in the language obtaining As in public examinations.
"You will find that some of these students had obtained low grades or failed in the school trial exams but somehow got As in the public exams.
"The results obtained for the paper are not reflective of their capabilities and this is the reason why the quality of our workforce has become a matter of concern," said Ameer, who worked as an English language teacher for 53 years.
He said to improve proficiency of the workforce, there should be more quality teachers in schools and their positions enhanced.
"The right people in the right positions can make a whole lot of difference."
Retired secondary school principal Liong Kam Chong said those who succeed in university usually had a strong command of the English language.
"The world out there looks for qualities that can fit into a global setting," he said.
Malaysian Association of Private Colleges and Universities (MAPCU) president Datuk Dr Parmjit Singh has observed "a difference" between local students and international students from certain countries.
"We do see a difference between the capabilities and level of competency beyond the grades. For example, we find students from Mauritius, Iran, Indonesia, Maldives, Botswana, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan more capable although they have the same grades.
"Their ability to articulate, numeracy skills and their soft- skills seem to be superior.
"We are now trying to address the soft-skills of students at the tertiary level but shouldn't these have been developed during their school days?" asked Parmjit, who is also APIIT Education Group CEO.

FED:Barnett's GST floor plan widely rubbished
By Josh Jerga
PERTH, April 1 AAP - A review into the GST carve-up has quelled what WA Premier Colin
Barnett tipped would be a Tea Party revolt in the West over the state's diminishing revenue.
But his proposal for a 75-cent floor is not likely to get much support with all other
states and territories as well as fiscal federalism experts rubbishing the idea.
For months Mr Barnett has claimed WA was being "ripped off" by the Commonwealth Grants
Commission (CGC), the independent authority which determines the GST carve-up.
He's warned of an American-style Tea Party revolt and that the state is under siege
and suggested that, if it continues, WA might as well put a gate on the Eyre Highway and
block out the federal government.
But Mr Barnett's proposal for a 75-cent floor in GST revenue has been widely panned.
According to WA Treasury figures, by financial year 2014/15 the state would receive
about 41 cents in the dollar back in GST revenue, down from the current 68 cents in the
dollar.
WA Treasurer Christian Porter says a floor would guarantee a fair and equitable distribution
of national income to "the most productive sector of the Australian economy".
"Secondly it allows the WA government to confidently plan for the future infrastructure
needs of what is still a growing economic sector with huge potential," he told AAP.
"The financial benefits for all states and territories of WA realising this potential
are manifest."
Although Queensland Treasurer Andrew Fraser shares WA's concerns that they are being
penalised by the CGC's assessment of mining revenue, he doesn't support a floor.
"I'm not convinced that arbitrary floors or ceilings are the best solution - at best
they are a patch-up job on a system that needs an overhaul," Mr Fraser said.
"I am in favour of reform, but it shouldn't be reform for reform's sake. It should
be measured, responsible and in the best interests of the national economy."
Newly-elected NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell told the National Press Club in February
he did not support a floor while South Australian Treasurer Jack Snelling flatly rejected
it.
Tasmanian Premier Lara Giddings said: "Arbitrary constraints such as floors that suit
one state over others would distort the process for the CGC's determination of a fair
share of the GST pool."
University of NSW Professor Neil Warren agreed that a floor was arbitrary and did not
go anywhere near to solving the current problems with horizontal fiscal equalisation.
Horizontal fiscal equalisation is used by the CGC to determine the carve-up of GST.
It aims to put every state and territory on a level playing field by ensuring each
has the same fiscal capacity to provide services and infrastructure.
The system essentially cuts GST revenue to states who raise more than average revenue
from its own sources while other states whose revenue falls get more.
Instead of a floor, Professor Warren, who has written extensively on the issue, said
a principled approach should be argued by WA.
He suggested Canada's model in which resource provinces have 50 per cent of their revenue
from resource-based taxes removed from the horizontal fiscal equalisation process.
"Seventy-five per cent is arbitrary and only masks the problem with horizontal fiscal
equalisation which is justifiably troubling WA," Professor Warren told AAP.
"The advantage of 75 per cent is that it is easy to communicate to the general public
but the disadvantage is that it only addresses a `symptom and not the disease'.
"The disease in this case is the total focus on horizontal fiscal equalisation and
the symptom is the GST distribution."
Professor Warren said making only part of states resource revenue subject to equalisation
would provide WA and Queensland with an incentive to encourage development of their mining
industry.
The carve-up of the GST revenue is a zero-sum game with only so much to go around and
hence one state's gain is another one's loss.
NSW is the dominant beneficiary of the carve-up with 30.8 per cent for financial year
2010/11, followed by Victoria, 23.4 per cent and Queensland, 18.6 per cent.
The dispute over the current GST distribution has essentially three camps, with the
mining states of WA and Queensland believing they support the rest of Australia.
Queensland Treasurer Mr Fraser said this was because the mining assessment was an "antiquated,
outdated tool that is robbing the resource states of funding".
"The southern states win out because their revenue raising levers aren't penalised
to the same extent as mining is - there has to be a better way to fairly assess the different
states taxation capacities."
The next camp is NSW and Victoria, who acknowledge the need to support smaller states
but believe the current system is not fair and does not provide certainty.
Their concerns were exacerbated by the CGC's current review which cut Victoria's share,
equating to a loss of $500 million in the 2011/12 financial year.
Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu said the cut was unjustified with his Treasurer Kim
Wells now calling for the decision to be suspended until the review has been completed.
The final camp includes the smaller states of Tasmania and SA as well as the two territories
who believe the current system is working well.
The Tasmanian premier supports horizontal fiscal equalisation as she believes its fair
and equitable for all states.
"We will not accept any changes that result in less money flowing to Tasmanians," Ms
Giddings said.
ACT Treasurer Katy Gallagher said it should be noted WA was a recipient government
under the equalisation process until 2007.
"I can appreciate that resource rich states may be frustrated at seeing a loss in their
GST due to booming royalties," she told AAP.
"But in my view wealth held in mineral deposits is not that different to the wealth
held by communities or even states."
Ms Gallagher said ACT loses nearly as much GST in per capita terms because of their
socio-economic status as WA and Queensland does due to their high royalty incomes.
Former member of the CGC, Professor Kenneth Wiltshire, defended the current process
saying equalisation is the "glue that holds the federation together".
However Professor Wiltshire, from the University of Queensland Business School, said
the CGC could do better in explaining its methodology and there was scope for simplification.
The review headed by former NSW Liberal premier Nick Greiner, former Victorian Labor
premier John Brumby and SA businessman Bruce Carter is expected to release its final report
in September 2012.
Judging by the current conflicting views among states over the GST distribution, the
next 18 months may see some hostile clashes across the federation and continued attacks
directed towards the CGC.
But Professor Wiltshire said this would be far from useful.
"It is not helpful for state premiers to blame the commission when it suits them and
then take the proceeds at other times," he said.
"The system has been too vital to Australia's nationhood to be jettisoned."

FED: Most of Australian children regularly see dentist
Eds: Embargoed to 0001 AEST, Wednesday, August 12
SYDNEY, Aug 12 AAP - They may not enjoy it but Australian children are regulars at
the dentist, a study shows.
About 80 per cent of Australian children report having seen a dentist in the past 12
months, according to an Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) report.
The statistic has remained stable over time, the AIHW says, after reviewing five separate
studies spanning the decade to 2005.
"From 1994 to 2005, approximately 80 per cent of children aged five to 11 years visited
a dentist within the previous 12 months," the report, released Wednesday, states.
The result was roughly the same for those in the 12- to 17-year age bracket.
Professor John Spencer, of the AIHW's Dental Statistics and Research Unit, says children
who made regular dental visits for a check-up benefited from early detection of oral disease.
The cost of a dental visit was highlighted as a barrier to seeing a dentist for only
a "low percentage of families", he also said.
"Cost is not a substantial barrier to children visiting a dentist because of free or
heavily subsidised School dental services in most states and territories," Prof Spencer
said.

Fed: Love scene with Bond girl tough, but someone's gotta do it
By Alyssa Braithwaite, National Entertainment Writer
SYDNEY, April 1 AAP - British actor Nick Frost is more funny guy than suave secret
agent, but he's scored his first love scene with Bond girl Gemma Arterton.
Frost plays ladies man and pirate radio DJ Dr Dave in The Boat That Rocked, the latest
ensemble comedy from Richard Curtis (Notting Hill, Four Weddings And A Funeral, and Love
Actually).
On-screen nudity didn't faze the portly star of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. He
just wanted to make sure he didn't have bad breath for 23-year-old Arterton.
"She was my first love scene so I found myself hiding Tic Tacs around the set because
I didn't want her to break off and think 'ewwww, his mouth tastes weird'," Frost, 36,
told AAP.
"So I brushed my teeth about four or five times and found myself being a bit of a gentleman,
and making sure none of the crew were leering at her.
"I think it's quite important to make her feel comfortable - not that she (needed it),
she's a very confident woman and I think that adds to her burgeoning sexuality."
Set in the swinging 60s, The Boat That Rocked follows the antics of a crew of DJs working
on a ship with a pirate radio station on it, who are intent on bringing rock music to
Britain.
It's men-only on the boat - apart from a lesbian cook - but once a week girls are allowed
to come aboard to get the boat really rocking.
Just another tough day at the office for Frost.
"Well you know, it is tough work," he said with a laugh.
But he concedes: "It's not like I've got blisters on my hands from breaking rocks all
day. She was very soft and smelt nice."
The Boat That Rocked features an all-star cast that also includes Bill Nighy, Philip
Seymour Hoffman, Kenneth Branagh, Rhys Ifans, Emma Thompson and Rhys Darby.
Before filming began, the cast was sent on "boat camp" - five days aboard an old hospital
ship to bond with each other and get used to life on the high seas.
"We had to go and live on it for five days and sleep on the boat and the whole cast
just kind of hung out, and we rehearsed all day, and then we ate together as a group at
night, and drank wine and the merriment began," Frost said.
"It was pretty cool actually, I have a fascination for boats.
"Also you're sleeping in those little bunks and they have to have sides on them, so
you're lying in, like a coffin, which, weirdly enough, gave me a great sense of security."
Frost also managed to make it through the shoot without getting sea sick.
"I have a great sturdy pair of sea legs," he said.
"I suffer from land sickness if anything. I feel quite queasy now."
The Boat That Rocked opens on April 9.

Vic: Fairfax newspapers to publish over weekend as usual
MELBOURNE, Aug 29 AAP - Fairfax Media newspapers including The Age and The Sydney Morning
Herald will be published as normal this weekend despite staff striking until Monday, the
company's chief executive David Kirk said today.
Editorial staff in Melbourne and Sydney walked off the job yesterday over job cuts
and pay negotiations.
The walkout comes just days after Fairfax Media announced it would cut 550 jobs under
a business improvement program.
Mr Kirk said staff were striking illegally but declined to say if the company would
take any action.
He said senior editorial staff and employees exempt from industrial action produced
today's paper after yesterday's strike.
"We have a number of staff who are contractually exempt from industrial action," Mr
Kirk told AAP.
"The plan is to continue to put out the newspapers absolutely as normal, and we are
well advanced in doing that.
"We see no concern in getting the papers out tonight, Saturday and Sunday, and Monday,

NSW: Extra cabs for festive season
SYDNEY, Dec 23 AAP - The NSW government is making it easier to get a cab over the Christmas-New
Year holiday by reissuing licences which put more taxis on the road during the early hours.
The government today said it would reissue peak-availability licences for another year,
meaning 114 extra taxis would be on the road each day between noon and 5am (AEDT).
Transport Minister John Watkins said there are 20 per cent more taxi trips during the
festive season, accounting for one million extra journeys.
"During the holiday period in Sydney, hundreds of thousands of revellers are out looking
for cabs - particularly in the early hours of Friday, Saturday and public holiday mornings,"
he said in a statement.
"Our metropolitan fleet of almost 5,000 taxis is inundated with additional phone, rank
and hailed cab fares during December."
Drivers of wheelchair-access taxis would get an extra $10 for each wheelchair hiring
on Christmas Day, he said.
The government also would provide new secure ranks at Manly, Wagga Wagga, Albury and Griffith.

Vic: Two questioned over nightclub assault
By Jane Bunce
MELBOURNE, Aug 19 AAP - A Melbourne man remains in hospital with serious injuries after
a brawl outside a Melbourne nightclub early today.
Two assailants allegedly punched and kicked the man, who suffered head and chest injuries.
Victoria Police will charge two men on summons over the assault.
Paramedics were called to the Barcode nightclub in the Crown Casino complex shortly
before 7am (AEST) and treated the victim, aged in his 20s, for half an hour.
The man's condition deteriorated and he was admitted to Royal Melbourne Hospital in
an "altered consciousness state", said ambulance spokeswoman Liana Cross.
"He had been assaulted but his condition could be attributed to a possible drug overdose,"
she said.
The man remains in a serious but stable condition tonight, a hospital spokeswoman said.
A second man also received minor injuries.
Police interviewed and released on summons a 23-year-old Roxburgh Park man and a 20-year-old
Reservoir man in relation to the assault.

FREE ISP: GETTING SOMETHING FOR NOTHING?
They say you can't get something for nothing.Well, maybe you can, but there is bound to be a catch.
I took a chance and tested that theory with a free Internet Service Provider.
I have been waiting (and waiting, and waiting) for my cable service to deliver on its promise of high-speed (and definitely not free) Internet service.
The CD-ROM from NetZero (www.netzero.com) came in the mail.
The company touts itself as "Defenders of the Free World." The software also can be downloaded from the company's Web site.
Relying on a free ISP can save Internet users from $250 to $500 a year. But, yes, there is a catch.
Consider it the difference between public broadcasting and commercial television.
In exchange for free Internet service, subscribers to NetZero also receive the ZeroPort, which displays messages from advertisers.
NetZero users must go to one of the advertisers' Web sites every 20 minutes or risk being booted off line.
The ZeroPort measures about 2 inches by 10 inches.
It can be moved about the screen, but it cannot be moved off screen or closed.
In addition to touting a company's products, the ZeroPort also notifies users of new e-mail and provides tickers for stock quotes, sports and news. What is displayed on the ticker can be customized to meet a user's specific needs.
NetZero's home page provides a search engine with search categories such as autos, home/family, people/chat and others.
Links to shopping, auction, new music and other sites also are featured.
Before installing NetZero I checked with the telephone company to make sure the access number for my area was a local call.
It was.
Setting up NetZero proved to be quite easy.
The software quickly walked me through the process and configured my e-mail account.
Other members of the family also can set up e-mail accounts.
For more detailed information, NetZero's Web site offers extensive resources on set-up with specific browsers and e-mail programs.
Part of the installation involves completing a form that tabulates demographic information on each user.
The form also profiles a user's interests, which is of use to advertisers.
I was surfing the Web in about 15 minutes.
After a few days of NetZero service it's a mixed verdict.
NetZero is easy to use and it's free.
But there is that pesky ad box, the ZeroPort.
Casual Net users may find NetZero (there also are other free ISPs out there) a bargain.
Taking a break to call up one of the advertiser Web pages isn't that big a problem.
Dedicated Web users or online gaming fans are bound to find the ZeroPort invasive and annoying.
FreeSpace 2: Volition/Interplay, P200, 32MB of RAM, 8X CD- ROM, 3-D hardware graphics accelerator.
Supports multiplayer. www.interplay.com
Designer Volition picks up the story 30 years later in this sequel to its exciting space-combat simulation Descent: FreeSpace.
A renegade band of Terrans threatens the uneasy peace between Terrans and Vasudans.
To complicate matters, the alien Shivans return to attempt to vanquish both races.
The story makes for an intriguing plot that the designers manage to weave seamlessly into the game's many missions and action.
Because of the complex plot, mission goals can change in the middle of the level.
Players take the role of a pilot who battles on the side of the Terran/Vasudan alliance.
At his command are more than 70 types of ship with 20 weapon systems.
The ships, especially the capital ships prove impressive.
Capital ships can be up to six kilometers long and they carry the firepower to match their size.
Graphically, FreeSpace 2 boasts of nice touches such as satisfying explosions and nebular gas clouds.
The clouds also serve a physical function as they block ship sensor readings.
Combat is dynamic with ships zipping on and off the screen.
Like any flight or space combat simulation, would-be pilots will find a lot to master in FreeSpace 2, from propulsion systems to shields.
The manual is detailed and the game does offer training missions.
The entertaining plot and fast action make FreeSpace 2 worth the time it takes to learn the game.

Ampex Corp. to Acquire Majority Interest in Web Services Affiliate.
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 1999--Ampex Corp. (Amex:AXC) today announced that it intends to acquire a majority interest in the capital stock of Reiter Associates Inc., increasing its holding from the approximately 20 percent level that it purchased in September 1998.
Privately held Reiter Associates, with servers located in the Philadelphia, Washington, and Northern California areas, is a rapidly growing provider of turnkey services for enterprises that use the world wide web to achieve their strategic business objectives. Reiter Associates' services include electronic commerce support, web hosting, Internet consulting and monitoring.
"The additional funds from Ampex will enable us to accelerate our growth nationally and to add new services," stated Carl Reiter, president and chief executive officer of Reiter Associates.
"A part of the new investment will be used to establish a network operations and monitoring center. This is vital to maintain quality as we expand geographically, and it allows us to support and participate in Ampex's strategy for expansion in web-related markets," he said.
Edward Bramson, chief executive officer of Ampex, stated, "Associating with Carl and his talented team brings us a key capability for building our presence in the web-based market area.
"From its beginning, Reiter Associates has shown a commitment to leadership in quality of technology and service that is distinctive in such a young, innovative company. This is our main reason for choosing Reiter to work with."
Ampex Corp., a pioneer in audio, digital video and digital image processing, has participated in the evolution of the Internet since the origins of the system in the 1980s. The company is building a marketing-oriented organization to leverage its digital image technology and expertise internally and through selected strategic investments.
The company's goal is to develop integrated audio, video, and electronic commerce offerings for delivery over the world wide web. "By establishing an early market presence in broadband web applications," Bramson stated, "we are positioning ourselves to expand the range, content and quality of our offerings in line with future increases in the availability of high-speed Internet access."
Terms of the Reiter Associates investment were not disclosed.
Ampex Corp., headquartered in Redwood City, is one of the world's leading providers of technologies for the acquisition, storage and processing of visual information. Today, Ampex is delivering digital image solutions for large-scale corporate, government, network, entertainment and telecommunications applications.
During its more than 50-year history of innovation, Ampex has been granted thousands of patents and numerous awards for technical achievement. Ampex customers include such leading organizations as AT&T, CNN, Federal Aviation Administration, Fox Television, Netcom, and Prevue Networks.
This news release contains forward-looking statements within the meaning of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 that involve risks and uncertainties and unforeseen circumstances that could cause actual results to differ materially from those currently anticipated. Potential risks and uncertainties include, without limitation, those mentioned in the company's 1997 Annual Report in Form 10-K, its quarterly reports in Form 10-Q for 1998 and its Annual Report in Form 10-K for 1998, which is expected to be filed later in the quarter. Additional specific factors that could prevent the company from realizing any benefits from its world wide web-based initiatives discussed above include: future demand for the services of Reiter Associates and its ability to obtain and manage resources for growth from its present size and to become profitable; Ampex's ability to transfer audio or video technology to web-based applications; its ability to find and consummate suitable strategic investments; to coordinate the strategy of such entities; to resolve conflicts arising from the ownership of less than all of such entities; future demand for web-based audio, video and e-commerce services; and the ability of Ampex or its investees to obtain the managerial, technical or other resources necessary to provide such services or to do so while generating a profit. If Ampex's strategy for the development of world wide web-based activities is implemented, it is likely that significant expenses would be incurred which could cause the company to report material losses in future periods. Such losses could negatively affect the price of the company's securities in future periods and could require it to obtain additional capital, which may be unavailable on satisfactory terms or at all.

In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, 4G LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink, so customers from Hilo to Pahoa can enjoy the fast speeds of the world's first large-scale 4G LTE network. Verizon Wireless began introducing the globe's first large-scale LTE network on December 5, 2010, covering more than 110 million Americans, and is quickly expanding national coverage. In addition to expanding eight markets, the company is adding 28 new markets this week, for a total of 102 areas covered. The company is rapidly building out its 4G LTE network, and is on course to deliver 4G LTE to its entire 3G wireless footprint by the end of 2013.
In addition, the company is working with rural communications companies to collaboratively build and operate a 4G network in those areas using the tower and backhaul assets of the rural company and Verizon Wireless' core 4G LTE equipment and premium 700 MHz spectrum. To date, 10 rural carriers have announced their participation in the LTE in Rural America program and have leased spectrum covering, in total, more than 2.1 million people in rural communities and nearly 72,000 square miles.
When customers travel outside of a 4G coverage area, the devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless' 3G network, enabling customers to stay connected from coast to coast. Verizon Wireless' 3G network is the most reliable network in the country, allowing customers with laptops, tablets and smartphones to download and use cool apps, from mobile social networking platforms to GPS-enabled maps; rapidly browse the web to keep up with news, sports, stock quotes, Hollywood gossip and more; work on-the-go with fast file sharing; and stream must-see video and customized radio stations.

The Empathic Civilization: The Race to Global Consciousness in a World in Crisis.(Book review)
THE EMPATHIC CIVILIZATION: The Race to Global Consciousness in a World in Crisis. Jeremy Rifkin. New York: Penguin Group, 2009. 675 pp. $27.95. Empathy, it seems, is on the rise and on the very cusp of enjoying its Warholian 15 minutes of fame. That is, if modern man does not destroy the Earth first. Such is the premise of this book: Prime reading for science and technology types, economic history buffs, and the environmentally conscious, Rifkin's 12 meticulously documented chapters are reasoned and compelling.
Rifkin is a prominent lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania, economic adviser to the European Union, and founder of a global economic development team. He asserts, in "Homo Empathicus," that humankind has grown increasingly empathic. From Darwin's not-so-famous belief that survival of the fittest included a social instinct and cooperative spirit, to more recent neuroscientists' empirical research declaring humans and animals to be hardwired for empathy, the concept that humans have a biologically based empathic impulse has never been as recognized and celebrated as it is today. In section two, "Empathy and Civilization," Rifkin carefully chronicles the 175,000-year-long evolution of humankind's empathic impulse through educational, political, religious, technological, and scientific contexts. The author points to modern-day empathic expansion via increased school-based collaborative and service learning experiences, reconciliation commissions, mirror neuron and emotional intelligence research, social tolerance for marginal groups, and proliferation of open-source software. Even concern for habitat-challenged polar bears and empathy's inclusion as a pertinent Supreme Court justice search criterion are markers of this movement. Clearly, "The Age of Empathy" is upon us.
So, too, is an acute need for overhauling economic systems, if humankind is to sustain itself. Rifkin's final section, "The Age of Empathy," submits the idea that the more empathic we become, the more we interconnect. Yet the more interconnected we become, the more we tax our planet's resources. "Our ever more complex
energy-consuming global civilization is careening the human race to the very brink of extinction," (p. 178) the author cautions. Rifkin further warns: "The economic question every country and industry needs to ask is, how to grow a sustainable global economy in the sunset decades of an energy regime whose rising externalities and deficiencies are beginning to outweigh what were once its vast potential benefits" (p. 477). In light of the author's eerily prophetic insight, readers may wish to seriously weigh Rifkin's solution for sustainability: democratized energy.
In a four-part, biosphere-saving plan, Rifkin states that the global population must commit to: 1) a shift away from fossil fuels and toward renewable forms of energy, 2) continued research and development of hydrogen fuel cell technology, 3) conversion of existing buildings to energy-producing structures, and 4) reconfiguration of the world's power grids along established Internet lines so that homeowners and businesses can produce and share their own energy. In doing so, we may just fashion the radical lifestyle and economic transformation necessary to move civilization toward "a more sustainable relationship with the Earth's biosphere" (p. 475). Although not yet fully realized, elements of Rifkin's plan are currently ongoing in Europe, China, Japan, and the United States.
Essentially, Rifkin's is a message of hope. His text recounts humankind's rising empathic consciousness, a phenomenon suggesting we have within us the willingness and ability to share expertise and solve our energy crisis. Coming to one another's aid and providing renewable energy access to all is our best chance of redirecting Earth's path toward sustainability and away from certain destruction. This book is a timely, well-researched, powerful read for those ready to rethink their place in an increasingly empathic, energy-consuming, interconnected world. Hundreds of Young Girls Are Victimized in Texas Sex Trade Each Month.
Dallas Women's Foundation Study, "Adolescent Girls in the Texas Sex Trade," Is First to Quantify This Crime in Texas
DALLAS, Jan. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A new study released today by Dallas Women's Foundation shows that the sex trafficking of young girls is not an isolated phenomenon, but a widespread criminal activity in Texas. "Adolescent Girls in the Texas Sex Trade," a statewide study of the commercial sexual exploitation of girls, documents that hundreds of girls under age 18 are being sold for sex in Texas, either online or through escort services during a one-month period. The report is the first to quantify domestic trafficking of girls in Texas and is part of a multi-year tracking study.
"No one wants to think their daughter could be a victim of sex trafficking, but it is happening to our children every day in communities large and small across Texas," said Becky Sykes, President and CEO of Dallas Women's Foundation. "This study will help shine a light on an issue that has remained in the dark too long so that, as a community, Texas can better understand, address and prevent the commercial sexual exploitation of girls."
Key findings from the research include:
* 740 girls under the age of 18 were documented being marketed for sex during a 30-day period.
* 712 of these girls were being marketed through Internet classified web sites; 28 were being marketed through escort services.
* There are more girls being trafficked for sex in Texas during one month than...
** ...there are women killed in domestic violence incidents with former or current husbands, intimate partners or boyfriends in Texas over an entire year (111)
** ...there are females of all ages who died from complications due to AIDS in one year in Texas (255)
** ...there are teen girls who died by suicide, homicide and accidents in the state in one year (461)
Research using the same methodology has also been conducted in Michigan, Minnesota and New York. Sex trafficking activity of girls in Texas was second to New York (1,089) in the same period, followed by Minnesota (199) and Michigan (148).
Dallas Women's Foundation is partnering with Texas non-profit advocacy group CHILDREN AT RISK to bring attention and action to this significant, but often overlooked, problem in Texas. CHILDREN AT RISK will provide the results of "Adolescent Girls in the Texas Sex Trade" to state legislators and advocate for legislation including some no-net-cost solutions:
* Recognizing children who have been trafficked as victims not criminals
* Removing the requirement for prosecutors to prove a trafficker convinced a minor victim to engage in a commercial sex act through force, fraud or coercion
* Collecting revenue from forfeitures by traffickers and buyers and using funds for victim services
* Impounding vehicles and imposing additional fines on buyers who solicit prostitution from minors
* Creating liability for third parties who benefit from trafficking situations
"Adolescent Girls in the Texas Sex Trade" counts adolescent girls being actively marketed on the Internet and through escort services using a probability-based, empirical approach. These advertisements are two of the main sources through which buyers find girls. There are no systematic and replicable methodologies to count street-level trafficking activity.
The tracking study "Adolescent Girls in the Texas Sex Trade" was conducted by The Schapiro Group over a 30-day period in November 2010 and will be repeated again this year in February 2011 (including Super Bowl weekend) and August 2011. The Schapiro Group, in conjunction with the Women's Funding Network, has conducted similar ground-breaking research in Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota and New York. Complete results of the Dallas study can be found online at www.DallasWomensFoundation.org/publications.
The Dallas Women's Foundation is also addressing this complex issue by making a $1 million lead gift to help build the Letot Girls' Residential Treatment Center in Dallas, which will be the only residential program in Texas serving trafficking victims and runaways who are at high risk of being exploited by traffickers. With facilities to accommodate 96 girls, it will also be the largest of only a small handful of residential facilities across the nation. John Hancock Launches Accumulation Variable Universal Life Product.
John Hancock Life Insurance announced the launch of a new Accumulation VUL product, a variable universal life policy that offers superior cash value and retirement income potential to pre-retirees.
The policy is ideal for a variety of applications including: Supplemental Retirement Income, Bonus Plans, Deferred Compensation Plans, and Supplemental Executive Retirement Plans.
"Accumulation VUL is an excellent choice for clients who need to provide for family or business financial obligations but who are also looking for a source of supplemental retirement income," said Steve Finch, President, John Hancock Life Insurance. "In these challenging markets, the enhanced Dollar Cost Averaging and Fixed Account feature can also offer clients a secure option while still providing opportunity for accumulation through the equity markets."
The new Accumulation VUL is priced and designed using the 2001 CSO mortality table, which allows for an extension of the benefit period to age 121.
Policy owners may choose from a broad array of underlying investment accounts that represent nearly every major asset class and investment style; or they may opt for the simplicity and automatic diversification offered by the Lifestyle Portfolios(1). In either case, they'll benefit from tax-deferred growth of policy values and tax-favored treatment of policy withdrawals(2).
The policy also offers a 20-year No-Lapse guarantee, no policy charges after age 100, and zero net cost loans.
Additionally, John Hancock is temporarily offering expanded Dollar Cost Averaging(3,4) options to allow transfers out of the Fixed Account (through December 31, 2010) and increasing the current Fixed Account(5,6) crediting rate by 2% through December 31, 2009 on the new Accumulation VUL. In turbulent markets, these new features allow clients to take advantage of the enhanced Fixed Account rate for the short-term, while Dollar Cost Averaging to one or more investment accounts, including the Lifestyle Portfolios for long-term growth potential.

Additional information about John Hancock may be found at www.johnhancock.com.
Variable universal life insurance has annual fees and expenses associated with it in addition to life insurance related charges (which differ with the product chosen), including surrender charges and investment management fees. Variable universal life insurance products are long-term contracts and are sold by prospectus. They are subject to market risk due to the underlying sub-accounts, and are unsuitable as a short term savings vehicle. The primary purpose of variable universal life insurance is to provide lifetime protection against economic loss due to the death of the insured person. Cash values are not guaranteed if the client is invested in the investment accounts. There are risks associated with each investment option, and the policy may lose value.
*The No-Lapse Guarantee (NLG) is automatically included with Accumulation VUL. It guarantees that your policy will not default, even if the cash surrender value falls to zero or below, provided the minimum NLG premium requirement and the cumulative premium test (performed at the point of lapse) are met. At the end of the No-Lapse Guarantee period, the policy value may be insufficient to keep the policy in force. Thereafter, premiums significantly higher than the No-Lapse Guarantee premium may be required to keep the policy in force. If you pay only the premium to satisfy the No-Lapse Guarantee, you may be foregoing the advantage of building up policy value. Once lapsed, the guarantee cannot be reinstated. Some products include a NLG that allows for the policy owner to catch-up on back premiums during the NLG period. The maximum duration of the NLG is 20 years and may be less at older ages. The duration of the benefit may be shorter in some states. In Illinois the NLG is called "Death Benefit Protection." Loans, withdrawals, or the addition of Supplemental Coverage can result in the loss of the NLG.
Insurance policies and/or associated riders and features may not be available in all states. Some riders may have additional fees and expenses associated with them. Refer to the product prospectus for additional information.
