Fed: Howard defends appointment of advisor to Washington

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has denied that the appointment of his senior advisor MICHAEL
THAWLEY to the Washington ambassador post is case of jobs for the boys.

Mr THAWLEY will replace former Liberal Party leader ANDREW PEACOCK in the plumb diplomatic post.

Mr Howard says Mr THAWLEY's the best person for the job and had previously served in
the Australian embassy in Moscow.

He says Mr THAWLEY will have a different style to that of the gregarious, party-throwing
Mr PEACOCK.

And Mr HOWARD admitted the coalition, in opposition, might have been wrong in criticising
Mr KEATING for appointing his advisor DON RUSSEL as Washington ambassador.
