NSW: Fire follows escape attempt and riot at detention centre
SYDNEY, Jan 1 AAP - Fire extensively damaged buildings at Sydney's Villawood DetentionCentre overnight after asylum seekers rioted following a failed mass break-out.
Police and officials from the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and IndigenousAffairs (DIMIA) are investigating the fires and subsequent riot that began at 10.30pm(AEDT) yesterday when up to 20 inmates attempted to escape.
The detainees allegedly stole a vehicle from within the south-western Sydney facilityand used it to ram a perimeter fence.
